A Wholesome Wonderland
Welcome to the coziest spot in the “mitten” state. Mid-Michigan Michigan is a wholesome and comfortable place that will make you feel at home the moment you arrive. Comprised of hard-working communities with deep histories, the feel of this region is down-home and uncomplicated.
Bavarian hospitality is what Frankenmuth is known for. Have an Old World dining experience and learn how to make your very own apple strudel or German pretzels. Delight in the authentic German glockenspiel, four times each day at noon, 3, 6, and 9 p.m., the thirty-five bell carillon plays familiar songs and the tower illustrates the story of the Pied Piper of Hamlen for enraptured guests.
In addition to German heritage, Frankenmuth celebrates Christmas 365 days a year. Enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of the world’s largest Christmas store, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland. It is the size of 1.7 football fields and has any gift or decoration your heart could desire. Visit the Silent Night Memorial Chapel, a replica of the original chapel located in Oberndorf, Austria, or take a breathtaking evening drive along Christmas Lane, a one half-mile display of over 100,000 lights. In addition to homespun elegance and low-key charm, Eastern Michigan is chock full of historical spots that will bring you back to a fascinating time in Michigan’s history.
Located along the Flint River, the city of Flint is exploding with culture and activity. Cruise Mott Lake on a charming paddlewheel riverboat. Explore the Flint Farmer’s Market with several produce vendors, a great meat market, poultry, breads and baked goods, cheese, a wine shop, an art gallery, a cafe, middle-eastern and Mexican groceries, and many unique gifts. Immerse yourself in the history of the area by visiting the museums and cultural center. Treat yourself to an afternoon of culture by strolling through the Flint Institute of Arts.
Explore the Midland Center for the Arts, where art, science, history, music, theatre, dance, films and classes are under one roof! While in Midland stroll through the rooms of the Alden B. Dow home. Dow studied architecture with Frank Lloyd Wright, and it is clear that Wright had a considerable influence on Dow. You can view his architectural studios and private residence. Alden was the son of the founder of Dow Chemical, the second largest chemical company in the world.
Clare boasts a true “Americana” downtown revitalization and is home to the infamous Cops & Doughnuts. Enjoy lunch at the popular “Traffic Stop Diner” located inside the historic bakery. After news came that the Clare City Bakery, a bakery since 1896 was going to shut down, nine police officers decided to buy the business! Just down the road from the bakery, tour the legendary Tobacco Ranch! This historic home was built by an attorney to entertain oil barons, mobsters and friends. The interior of the Tobacco Ranch house has beautiful stone pillars, multiple stone fireplaces, and a large enclosed porch overlooking the pond and is filled with history.
Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, Muskegon is home to plenty of local flair and provides the backdrop of blue skies and beautiful beaches. Once named the eighth wonder of the world, Lake Michigan sand dunes will provide visitors vivid scenery unlike anywhere in the state. Known for more than beaches, Muskegon is rich in culture and history. The Lakeshore Museum will enrich visitors as they learn the history and significance of several of Muskegon’s historical lumber baron families and establishments.
A mix of history, wholesome family fun, and superior shopping mixed with small town charm and delectable culinary options makes for quite the trip to Mid-Michigan.
