Exciting Changes in Port Huron

By Danielle Devota
It had been a while since I had last visited Port Huron. And I heard the city had undergone a lot of updates and renovations, so I figured I was due for another visit to check out all the changes. It did not disappoint!
Port Huron has so much to offer—sightseeing, great food, lots of fun group activities, and everything nautical. I started this visit by joining a tour of the Carnegie Museum, one of several Port Huron museums that offers new group tours on everything from historic churches and prohibition to murder and mayhem. The Carnegie Museum recently opened the Pilot House, which offers an interactive video view of various waterways. Considering Port Huron is known as the Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes, this addition is all too fitting and a truly unique experience.
After the tour, I checked out some of the new food offerings at Wrigley Center in downtown. Wrigley has a new steak and seafood restaurant, Port, as well as two food stalls. I opted for the food stalls, but I appreciated the options housed all in one place. Even better, Wrigley is close to several speakeasies, including MoonCurser’s and The Laundry Room. While a quick stop to one of the speakeasies was tempting, I wanted to catch a comedy show at the new Boardwalk Theatre. The venue offers shows all year long—from concerts and comedians to musicals and more.
After the show, I had to take a stroll on the boardwalk, right near the theater in Palmer Park. This boardwalk is the world’s longest freshwater boardwalk, which, aside from the view, is reason enough to check it out!
After a restful night at my hotel, I was ready for more exploring the next day. I decided to start by checking out the newly renovated Freighters Eatery & Taproom. While I’ve previously been there in the evening to enjoy the taproom, I decided to check out its breakfast offerings. The restaurant recently updated its menu, and it was everything I was looking for. I opted for the glazed doughnut waffle, which was a delicious treat to start the day.
After breakfast, I caught an art class at the Foundry, which offers a variety of classes. I opted for the Cosmic Pottery class, so I could take my creation with me the same day.
There are even more new updates to explore in Port Huron—it’s hard to pack it all into one visit. I will definitely be back!
