Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours operates between mid- May and mid-October with a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and guest experience throughout all facilities and vessels. Daily operations include routine inspections of boats, docks, and boarding areas to ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard standards and company safety policies. Ticketing, boarding, and guest services are coordinated to maintain smooth traffic flow and on-time departures, while trained crew members manage vessel operations, narration, and deck assistance. Facilities are kept clean, accessible, and well-marked, with ongoing maintenance performed to support reliable operations during the full operating season. All staff are trained to respond promptly to changing weather, waterway conditions, and guest needs, ensuring a safe, professional, and enjoyable experience for every visitor.
The Tour Boat Captain is responsible for the safe and professional operation of company vessels while delivering an exceptional experience for all guests. This role includes navigating and maneuvering the tour boat through the Soo Locks and surrounding waterways, complying with all U.S. Coast Guard regulations, company policies, and safety procedures, and working closely with the crew to ensure smooth boarding, departures, and tours. Captains are expected to maintain situational awareness, communicate clearly with lock personnel and crew, and respond effectively to changing weather and waterway conditions.
Applicants must hold a valid U.S. Coast Guard 100-Ton Master License or be eligible to obtain one, with the ability to meet all licensing, medical, and drug testing requirements as required by the U.S. Coast Guard. Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism, and a commitment to safety at all times. Requirements include excellent communication skills, the ability to work effectively as part of a team, and the capability to remain calm and decisive in a dynamic marine environment. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass all required background checks, drug screenings, and medical evaluations. Prior maritime or passenger-service experience is preferred. The position requires the physical ability to work outdoors for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, assist guests when needed, and work flexible schedules including weekends, holidays, and varying shifts throughout the operating season.
